 GSC1v2Girls Surf Comp 20162016 Year 9 – 12 Girls Surf Competition

On Friday 22nd April eight girls from Years 9 to 12, travelled to Crunchies at Point Leo for the annual Girls Surf Competition. Fifteen schools from across Victoria competed for the title under quite poor surf conditions. Congratulations to all girls who surfed well.  Unfortunately didn’t make it through to the finals. All the girls had a great day, getting in some swimming and body surfing between heats.

International Surfing Excursion

On the 18th of April a group of international students from China, Germany and Italy went Alex intl surfingfor an exciting surfing adventure.  It was a two-hour course provided by the “Go Ride A Wave” Surfing School taking place in Torquay, the “surfing capital of Australia”.

After a round of popup practice on the sunny autumn beach students jumped into the sea to chase waves.  They soon demonstrated excellent padding techniques and many students like Alex, Marie, Nicola, Olivia were able to stand up and surf like a professional.  Well done guys!

School Surfing Titles 2015surf2

A group of eight intrepid students represented Sandringham College at the Victorian Titles held recently at Jan Juc near Torquay. Our entire group somehow managed to fit a surf in prior to the start and being out in the water on a sunny 21 degree day was a real hoot.

With the swell about 1.2 metres on a dropping tide, our draw took us into the semi-finals.

Each member of the team did their utmost to find two clean waves in the changing conditions before heading to shore to tag in their next team mate. The swell became somewhat unpredictable and subsequent wave choices were difficult, yet decisions had to be made. I was really impressed with the integrity and sportsmanship of our entire squad who came a respectable third. We were ousted by Lorne Airey’s Inlet P12 and Surf Coast Secondary College. They were tough opposition, but it was Wonthaggi SC that was the ultimate winner.

I would like to thank Bree Burke and Jill Marshall for their assistance and Rob Wegner for allowing me to step in for him. Most of all I would like to thank Quin, Rory, Olivia, Molly, Lola Levy, Sam, Dylan and Ave for a great team effort and a most enjoyable day.

All-Girls Surfing Competition Pt Leo Beach 2015

The day was very windy with a large swell running. This made the conditions very challenging and difficult to catch any waves. We were in the first heat against Newhaven College, Dromana SC and Toorak College. Our first surfer was Molly who caught her first wave early and scored well on it. After her second wave, her sister Lucy entered the water. After catching her 2 waves there was a call to stop the event due to the increase in difficulty. The current was difficult to paddle against and unfortunately the rest of the team missed out on surfing in the event. So too did the other 5 teams in heat 2. This was the first time in 15 years it has been cancelled due to poor conditions. After locating to another surf spot our girls all had a fun practice session. We have a good group of surfers for next year’s competition.
